Hiking in Salt Lake City with small kids-Cecret Lake


Britten and I enjoy spending time outdoors and enjoying the mountains here in Salt Lake City. At the beginning of the summer we invested in good water-proof hiking boots. We did about 8 hikes last summer so I think this is a hobby we will really enjoy while living here on the Wasatch Front. Each time we go out we hope our 4 year old will be willing to hike on her own. After having many difficult hiking excursions last summer, we went to REI and invested in a Poco Plus carrier. It is a structured carrier that comes with an attached backpack. It is a lifesaver! We would not be able to hike with Farrah without it. This past Saturday we hiked up to Cecret Lake from Alta Resort. We parked our car and had to wait in line to take the shuttle up to start the hike. Once off the shuttle the hike to Cecret lake is only 1 mile. This seemed to be a good distance to do with a 4 year old and 1 year old. Our 1 year old has been a baby-wearing baby her whole life. She enjoys being attached to me so she has no complaints. Now that she is One, I prefer wearing her on my back. I use an Ergo baby carrier. I literally never heard a peep out of her the whole hike. She loved looking around at the mountains and trees. The hike is rather steep and not 250 yards in, Farrah started complaining that her legs hurt. We had told her if she did the hike, that we could go get ice cream afterwards. This incentive did nothing to encourage her. My husbands patience was waning so he put her in the Poco.  She weighs 35 pounds now, so he got quite the workout. On our way up we saw many kids her age, and even smaller walking. But we also saw a good amount of kids on parents backs, shoulders, or in carriers. We brought 4 bottles of water with. It was about 78 degrees out and sunny. We also brought energy bars for Britten and I, as well as cheese and crackers for the girls. Once we got up to the lake we found a shady spot under a tree to rest and have snacks. Overall it was a beautiful day and we will add this hike to our annual list of must-hikes!

Hiking Provo Canyon in Spring

First off research where you are going before you hike! We tried to visitBridal Veil falls this past weekend but it is closed due to Avalanche risks. Luckily Nunn falls nearby is open and there is a river, nice paved trail, and small playground perfect for the 2-6 age range! We let the kids play and then took a short stroller friendly walk. The only difficulty was an abundance of people on skateboards so keep your little ones close by! On Sunday we went to Grotto Falls. This was a short muddy hike!! Only .5 miles 1 way but not a great Spring hike if you aren't looking to get wet or muddy! I wore white/light grey capris which got muddy! Thankfully we had hiking boots on so feet stayed dry. We saw some hiking barefoot, and many people not prepared for the terrain. I kept our 2 year old in the Ergo baby carrier the whole time. I would recommend trying Grotto falls later in the summer!

Spartan Sprint Race while pregnant

My husband and I got into Spartan racing last summer. Our first race was the Utah Super (6 miles) in August 2017. Our second race was the Michigan Sprint (5 miles) in September. We finished our first TRifecta, completing all 3 race distances in one year with the Central Florida Beast in December (13 miles).  We went ahead and purchased a Trifecta pass for this year, excited to improve our speed and technique on obstacles and try out some races in different states. We discovered its a great way to have an active vacation!  Well in January, I started to feel off, not like myself.  I so was moody and realized my period was late!! Flying alone with 2 kids

   Anyone else make the daring decision to fly alone with a 4 and 21 month old? I have flown numerous  times with my older daughter and 2-3 times with both girls. Today will be the first time I drive to the airport and do the entire trip alone. I have 2 small spinner suitcases packed. I will use a backpack to hold snacks/toys. I am bringing a DVD player and a Kids Fire tablet. Lots of snacks!! Popcorn, crackers, cheese sticks, and sippy cups. I weighed my 4 year old and finally weighs 40 pounds!! Hurray! So no more lugging the heavy Car seat. I will have my Dad pick us up a booster seat to keep at his house.      We live across the country from all our family. Traveling is a way of life if we want to see family. Our girls are TSA experts. I always bring the stroller as walking gate to gate for a 4 year old sometimes works and sometimes they are too tired or cranky. I have never flown with my big double Bob stroller.
